Driving with your Pets

The preferred method of travel by most pet owners is by the family vehicle. Driving gives the whole family time to relax and enjoy each others company.
While driving with your furry, feathered or scaled friend try to make the following preparations.

  • Make sure your pet is fit for the ride.  Some older pets may not be as comfortable riding for long stretches of time.  Make sure to take your pet to the vet before embarking on any journey.
  • Find a place in the vehicle for your pet to stay. This should be away from the driver if possible.  The last thing you want is your pet to be running around your feet while driving causing an unsafe condition for everyone.
  • Never place your pet in the back of a pickup truck.  This is way too risky and dangerous. As saying above you should make the pets spot on the "inside" of the vehicle.
  • Bring any vet documentation with you especially if traveling outside your home state.
  • Ensure you have adequate water for the trip.
  • Make sure to bring plenty of your pets favorite toys and other familiar items from home.  This will cut down any anxiety your pet may experience.
  • Take short rides in the car several days ahead of your planned trip with your pet.  This will acclimate your pet to traveling in a vehicle, this is especially important if you are planning a long expedition.
  • Communicate with your pet during your trip.  Pets are calmed by the voices of their loved ones; making a potentially frightening ride a very enjoyable one.
  • Do not allow your pet to hang out the window, just as you wouldn't allow your child to behave this way for obvious safety reasons.
